Is it Time to Change Your Focus?

Updated: Sep 7, 2021

Do you need a microscope, or a telescope?

Are you zoomed in so far that you can’t see the big picture?

Or, are you zoomed so far out that you can’t focus on the next task to move you forward?

We create fear, worry, anxiety and overwhelm when we stay in one lens for too long.

We feel overwhelmed with all the tasks at hand when we stay zoomed out, and we create fear and worry (which compound into anxiety) when we stayed zoomed in.

But when we allow ourselves to move between the two, we can find some stability and relief there.

It can be so helpful to take a step back and see the grand scheme of it all when we’ve become hyper focused on the details and the “what if’s” right in front of us.

It can also be so relieving to step inward and realize all we have to do is just the next task in front of us, not the thousand we have running through our mind all at once.

So when you find yourself feeling heavy, anxious, or like your head might explode from all that is expected of you, step back. What is that you really, truly want? What does God want from you? I try to consciously stare at the sky every night. I have two big windows at my house that I pass frequently, and for even just a few seconds I compel myself to stop and stare. The sky always grounds me, and allows my brain to take me to the big picture. I turn to God, the vastness of the universe and how the problems I’m facing, while real, don’t mean too much in the end. Because I will only be on this earth for a short while, learning and growing and showing my faith, and then I’ll be back up in heaven. It reminds me what is most important to me— faith and family. My problems and struggles seem less intense and overwhelming. I can take a deep breath and know that no matter what, it’s going to be ok. And I believe it.

On the flip side, whenever there’s something “big” on my plate, I immediately go to overwhelm and worry from the thoughts, “There’s so much to do. I’m not sure I’ll have enough time. I might not do a good job if I hurry, but if I don’t hurry I won’t get it all done.” These are things like building a business, future outcomes like the presidential election and coronavirus, going to school, planning a wedding or any other event with a large guest list, thinking of the outcome of raising children, working on a relationship, and all the other “big” things. All the little things we need to accomplish in order for the outcome to be desirable swarm our minds, and it’s so easy to get lost in everything we need to get done. So when we find ourselves spinning in circles and overwhelmed with all the things, step inward. What is the next task you need to complete? What are your top priorities that you really want to focus your time on? How can you make this more easy and more fun?

Focusing on the big picture or the next task to get done will help you focus on what is the most important, sort your priorities, and help you know that God is always there and has the most amazing plan for you as you focus on His voice.

So, do you need to zoom in, or zoom out?

Both are incredible tools to help you thrive my friends.
